"Thanks to New Generation, I was able to prepare for the birth of my child within a safe and loving environment, and get back on my feet prepared for a new life. Seven years later I still benefit from the knowledge and friends I made at New Generation. Because of the relationship I built with one resident I was able to earn my college degree by swapping baby-sitting time and having her all-around support when times were tough. I am proud of what New Generation has helped me and many other women accomplish: to become positive, educated parents and role models for our children and productive members of our communities."

The New Generation shelter provides love, respect and care to pregnant homeless women and mothers of young children regardless of race, religion, marital status, disability, or economic status. The home program combines individual and group goals. The residents at New Generation are required to attend our Parenting Education program. While seeking and securing permanent housing, the resident's individual goals may involve parenting or adoption education, getting a job, attending Alcoholics Anonymous, obtaining a General Education Diploma, or applying for college. Group goals include prenatal care, parenting education, nutrition and health education, counseling, and learning daily life skills. New programs include Resident Budgeting Classes and a Resident Computer Education Program.

Daily living revolves around a family-oriented routine. Meals are prepared and shared by the residents. Household tasks are rotated, and residents maintain a busy schedule that includes volunteering in New Generation's Thrift Shoppe and Day Care Facility; attending well-baby and dental visits; participating in full or part-time employment; going on recreational outings; and visiting the various community agencies that facilitate the continuum of care.

The home staff includes the Executive Director who is also a nationally certified counselor, a Parent Educator with extensive healthcare experience, a Daystaff person who reiterates the parenting education and lifeskills lessons, a Resident Staff person, a Director of Fundraising, an Office Manager, a Bookkeeper, a relief House Staff and Aftercare Coordinator. The Resident Staff person is onsite at the shelter after hours and on holidays. Volunteers are always appreciated for substitute staff, transportation, household maintenance and repairs, and social activities.

The residents at New Generation are required to attend parenting education classes and meet with the Executive Director.  Because we value our working or attending school, the program is flexible and scheduling is done with each resident the prior week.

We believe that the best environment for residents combines the love and comfort of an affirming environment with the structure of a daily routine and clearly established house rules and responsibilities.

Friendship, reunions and continuing services are available to past residents and their families as part of our ongoing Aftercare Program.
